Understanding Climate risks: the process
Why this matters
This work is a critical step toward a climate-ready Gwent. It will:
- Equip public services and communities to understand climate risks.
- Foster collaboration and leadership across sectors.
- Provide a foundation for long-term climate resilience* in the region so that public services and communities are better prepared.
Our Five-Step Process
- Information Sharing – Bringing everyone working in this area up to speed on what climate risks mean for Gwent and why your input matters.
- Exploring Gwent-Wide Risks – Working together to identify the biggest challenges across public services for health and social care, infrastructure, nature, economy, and communities.
- Understanding Community Resilience* – Listening to local voices to understand priorities and lived experiences.
- Developing Leadership – Supporting leaders to respond effectively and guide change.
- Moving from Risk Assessment to Adaptation – Turning insights into action—building plans that make Gwent stronger and safer.
What’s in it for you, your organisation and community?
Taking part means:
- Having a voice in shaping Gwent’s future.
- Gaining insight and confidence to face climate challenges.
- Moving from reactive actions to proactive planning.
- It’s about taking control—making sure your organisation and community are ready, not just aware.
About the Gwent Climate Change Risk Assessment
The Gwent Climate Change Risk Assessment is a region-wide initiative designed to help us understand the growing risks of a changing climate, through expert analysis, inclusive engagement, and leadership development.
This is a unique opportunity for stakeholders to shape the future resilience* of their communities and local services by contributing their knowledge and sharing their experiences.
Why We’re Doing This
Climate change affects everything—from roads and bridges to health services, nature, and local businesses. By working together, we can:
- Identify the most pressing risks.
- Share knowledge and data.
- Build strategies that protect people, places, and livelihoods.
Who’s Involved
This project brings together:
- Public sector partners – Councils, Health Boards, Emergency Services, Natural Resources Wales.
- Businesses – From large employers to small enterprises.
- Community organisations – Voluntary groups, housing associations, town and community councils.
- Residents and local voices – People who know their communities best.
*Resilience: capacity to prepare for, respond to, and recover from the impacts of hazardous climatic events while incurring minimal damage to societal wellbeing, the economy and the environment
